Anchorwomen drop a heartbreaker

The Rhode Island College Anchorwomen dominated possession and played valiantly, but were heartbroken in the second overtime as they dropped Monday night's match in to Roger Williams University, 1-0.

The Anchorwomen controlled the ball for much of the match, but their downfall was a combination questionable passing and off-target shots that sailed well wide and high of goal.

Despite its misfortune, RIC certainly acquired its chances, the most threatening coming in the 76th minute when Brittney Godbout took a ball in the box, beat her mark, and looked up at an open goal before her shot flew high above the bar.

RWU, to its credit, responded with a shot off the far post soon after. Off a corner kick with time winding down in the 82nd minute, Jackley Vendola sent a powerful header banked right off the bar, keeping the score unchanged for the remainder of regulation.

RIC continued its dominance in the first OT, and the early part of the second extra frame as well. Then, the Hawks capitalized off a misplayed Anchorwoman clearance in the 104th minute, and quickly assembled the attack. Lindsay Crepeau took the ball, fed it to Amanda deCuhna on the right, near the edge of the box. DeCunha dribbled forward, and then banged it top shelf of the far post as the stunned home crowd froze sheer disbelief after the home team had dominated for so much of the match.
